My experience here at Zhong Ping Junior High

Hi, my name is Asher Tseng. I come from Los Angeles. Over the past 2-3 weeks here at this school (722 class), this school has exceeded my expectations in all ways. At first, I was complaining about having to come to school because my summer had already started back home. I felt like I was getting robbed of my summer. Turns out, this was a remarkable experience that I would remember for many years to come.

On my first few days, I was welcomed with barrages of questions. After every class, they would swarm my desk and talk to me about video games, my LINE, where I’m from, and more. Day by day, I started getting comfortable with schedules, friends, and the class in general.

Over the course of this opportunity, I learned many things like the average Taiwanese students’ life, school, and rules in Taiwan, and classroom/teacher styles, cultures, and more. What surprised me in Taiwan was that you get the opportunity to take a nap in class after lunch, helping me refuel and get ready for the second half of the day. The fact that we have 10-minute breaks in between classes and that I don’t need to move to the teacher’s classroom is what really made school different.

The best thing here was that the students and teachers were all friendly and helpful, helping me get past each day. The varieties of subjects help me be able to learn more subjects than I usually do at home. Lastly, I want to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity, especially class number 722. Although this might’ve been the most stubborn and noisy class, I couldn’t have made it without their help. 😆

Sincerely, Asher Tseng

此致,

以樂

Biography簡介

I have 3 younger brothers.

The oldest brothers are both 11-year-old twins, and the youngest brother is 7 years old.

We usually live in LA, but since it is summer, we came to live with grandpa in ZongHe.

This summer, my entire family came back to Taiwan except for my dad, who is cleaning the house.

I am the only brother that has to come to school in Taiwan.

My brothers just stay home watching movies.

We are going back to LA at the end of July.

Where I live in LA is full of Asians. The city is called Hacienda Heights.

My school and its rules

I go to a school by the name of South Pointe. The school is highly regarded as the best school for band in the country (at least that’s what my teachers tell me). The school is very different from schools in Taiwan.

In Taiwan, the teachers go to the classrooms of the students. Students here have their own tables. In America, the students go to the classrooms of the teachers. The schools in America give more freedom when it comes to classes you are interested in. For example, there are multiple advanced classes for different subjects and different clubs (electives) you can choose from.

我就讀的學校叫做 South Pointe(南峰中學)。

Another thing that is different from school in Taiwan is that each student has 6 periods, unless you have 0 period. These 6 periods that you have are the same everyday; however, students will go to these 6 periods in a different order every day, but the sixth period will always be last. For example, on Monday, your classes will be the order of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, then 6th. On Tuesday, your schedule would be 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 1st, then 6th. On Wednesday, your schedule would look like 3rd, 4th, 5th, 1st, 2nd, and then 6th.

At school in America, you are exposed to a lot of technology with each classroom having their own laptop cart, providing laptops for each student (except for classes like band and PE

例如,星期一的上課順序是第1節、第2節、第3節、第4節、第5節,最後是第6節;

星期二的順序會變成第2節、第3節、第4節、第5節、第1節,再來是第6節;

The rules are also very different. In my opinion, rules here in Taiwan are much looser than the ones back in LA. At school, you are unable to eat in class, talking out of turn is not allowed, talking back to a teacher is a big no-no, and etc. The school usually sends kids that are not following directions or being respectful to detention. However, when teachers give detentions, the student must stay in class until the end and go to detention on his own free time. Most schools also have the 3 strikes and your out rule which means that each time you do something serious like fighting, you get a strike. As the name suggests, after 3 strikes, you are expelled from school.

(3 strikes and you're out)的規則,也就是說,每當你做出像打架這類嚴重的行為,就會得到一個 strike(警告記錄)。

LA has a mix of all kinds of culture. LA is known to be one of the world’s most inspiring cultural cities. The area has history the Mexican and Spanish empires and is a major destination for immigration. There are also many diverse neighborhoods including Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Tokyo, and etc. All in all, LA is full of diverse cultures, vibrant arts, and creative economies.
